During a working career of 45 years, No. 2857 recorded a total mileage of 1,276,713 miles. It is often forgotten that in the early days of preservation, locos often left Barry by rail - as did 2857 in 1975. 2874.JPG GWR 2-8-0 no. 2874, dating from 1918 and withdrawn from service in May, 1963. 2874 is one of several ex-Barry locomotives now stored at the Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway. 4277a.jpg Former GWR 2-8-0T no. 4277 waits hopefully in the sunshine. Eight of the 42XX/52XX class survive. 6023.JPG 'King' class 4-6-0 no. 6023 'King Edward II', now at Didcot. 80xxx.JPG Another BR standard 4 2-6-4T. Made redundant by the electrification of the London, Tilbury and Southend line in the early '60s a number of the class were transferred to the Western Region and eventually found their way to Barry - which ensured their survival. 42xx.JPG Another former GWR 2-8-0T, once a familiar sight on coal trains in South Wales. 4253.JPG GWR 2-8-0T no. 4253 left Barry in August 1987 for storage at the Pontypool and Blaenavon Railway. 4270.JPG GWR 42XX 2-8-0T no. 4270 photographed in 1975. 0by.JPG A general view of Woodham's Scrapyard, Barry in 1973; many of the locomotives present at this time are now fully restored and working on Britain's heritage railways. 30xxx.JPG A gloomy picture - but not for this former Southern locomotive. 56xx.JPG A GWR class 56XX viewed from another locomotive. 5668.jpg The unmistakable outline of a GWR 56XX 0-6-2T. Very little has been written about the affects of asbestos fibres from locomotives in this condition blowing across the town. 5227.jpg GWR 2-8-0T no.5227. 5227 was built at Swindon in June 1924 and spent the whole of its working life in South Wales being based for most of the time at Ebbw Junction Shed, Newport. 57xx.JPG Three GWR 0-6-0PT pannier tanks find safety in numbers at Barry in 1973. 61264.jpg LNER Thompson B1 4-6-0 no. 61264 at Barry on 16th August 1975. This loco is once again active on the main line, most notably on the West Highland 'Jacobite' railtours. 4270b.jpg Another view of GWR 2-8-0T no. 4270 before removal for restoration. 4270a.jpg Nowadays undergoing restoration at the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway, GWR 2-8-0T no. 4270 appears to be in reasonable shape for a Barry inmate in this view. 4270c.JPG GWR 2-8-0T no. 4270. It was later rescued for preservation at Swansea and subsequently sold on to the Gloucestershire & Warwickshire Railway. 4270d.JPG 4270 again, with one of its sisters. 45xx.JPG Ring for details! This unidentified GWR 45XX 2-6-2T typifies the condition from which most Barry locos were restored. 76084.jpg A coating of red oxide primer has made BR standard 4MT 2-6-0 no. 76084 look a little less forlorn! 34046.jpg Boxpoc wheel. The BFB or 'Boxpoc' wheel was a feature of Bulleid locomotive designs, being both stronger and lighter than traditional spoked wheels. The loco has now donated its boiler to Didcot's project to recreate Hawksworth ‘County’ 4-6-0 no. 1014 ‘County of Glamorgan’. 30499a.JPG Urie 'S15' 4-6-0 no. 30499 was built in 1920, withdrawn in 1964 and spent an incredible 19 years at Barry. 53809.JPG A locomotive which was bound to go for preservation, Somerset & Dorset 2-8-0 no. 53809 on 16th August 1975. 92085a.JPG The remains of 9F 2-10-0 no. 92085, withdrawn from Birkenhead in December 1966 and cut up in July 1980. 92085.jpg Most of the locomotives in this section have survived the cutter's torch; many of them have been restored to working order. Here's a last look at one which didn't escape; BR '9F' 2-10-0 no. 92085 which was cut up in July 1980. 73096.JPG BR standard 5MT 4-6-0 no. 73096. This is another of preservation's great success stories; the locomotive is now active on the Mid Hants Railway and has put in frequent appearances on main line specials. ZD6122.jpg 1973 line-up. The diesel (D6122) didn't survive, being cut up in June 1980. In the 1970s and '80s visitors to Barry could wander around freely and climb on locomotives. I wonder what modern health and safety legislation would make of it? j.JPG The smouldering remains of some scrapped BR brake vans. It was such work which saved so many locomotives from the torch. k.JPG Four locomotives of BR and GWR origin awaiting rescue. The causeway for the line from Barry to Barry Island can be seen in the background. zD6122c.jpg Another line-up at Barry. Identifiable (left to right) are type 2 Bo-Bo diesel D6122 cut up in June 1980, West Country Pacific 4-6-2 34046 'Braunton' and an unrebuilt 'Battle of Britain' class. Finally, on the right is the cab of class 5MT 4-6-0 no. 45491. 6634.JPG Former GWR 0-6-2T no. 6634. After a period at the East Somerset Railway, the loco passed to Crewe Heritage Centre for restoration. 73156.JPG BR 5MT 'Standard 5' 4-6-0 no. 73156, currently under restoration at Loughborough. 75079.jpg BR standard 4MT 4-6-0 no. 75079. The loco was eventually rescued for restoration at the Plym Valley Railway. 7298.JPG LMS 'Jinty' 0-6-0T no. 7298 is at the centre of this shot, taken in 1973. 7298 was rescued the following year and is now active at the Llangollen Railway. The 16T mineral wagons are a clue to the survival of so many locomotives; Woodhams found it more cost effective to dispose of those in preference to the more complex locos - which, in the event, the company was able to resell to preservationists! 6024.JPG 'King' class 4-6-0 no. 6024 'King Edward I', nowadays active on the main line, during its sojourn at Barry. The loco left the yard for preservation in 1973. 92219.jpg BR '9F' no. 92219, built 1960, withdrawn for scrap....September 1965. D6122, which would be a worthy preservation candidate nowadays, was cut up at Barry in June 1980. Withdrawn in December 1967, D6122 became the last survivor of the 57 strong class to be disposed of. 31638.JPG Maunsell U class 2-6-0 no. 31638, now at the Bluebell Railway, left Barry in July 1980. At one time thought to be beyond restoration, having had its centre driving wheels cut, the loco is now being restored at Carnforth. 48151.JPG LMS 2-8-0 no. 48151 looks well cared for in this shot, taken on 16th August 1975. The loco has since been restored to main line running condition. 47406.jpg LMS 'Jinty' 0-6-0T no. 47406.
