Phil T's Rail Photos
{H} The Barry Scrapyard File.

It's difficult to know where the British railway preservation movement would be without Dai Woodham's scrapyard at Barry. Over 200 locomotives were rescued from the yard and now form the mainstay of services on heritage railways throughout the country.

LMS 'Jinty' 0-6-0T no. 7298 is at the centre of this shot, taken in 1973. 7298 was rescued the following year and is now active at the Llangollen Railway. The 16T mineral wagons are a clue to the survival of so many locomotives; Woodhams found it more cost effective to dispose of those in preference to the more complex locos - which, in the event, the company was able to resell to preservationists!

Most of the locomotives in this section have survived the cutter's torch; many of them have been restored to working order. Here's a last look at one which didn't escape; BR '9F' 2-10-0 no. 92085 which was cut up in July 1980.

Walkway. In the 1970s and '80s visitors to Barry could wander around freely and climb on locomotives. I wonder what modern health and safety legislation would make of it?
