{H} The Barry Scrapyard File.

It's difficult to imagine where the British railway preservation movement would be without Dai Woodham's scrapyard at Barry. Over 200 locomotives were rescued from the yard and now form the mainstay of services on heritage railways throughout the country. Here are some of them before they were 'liberated'.

Nowadays a Severn Valley loco, this was GWR 2-8-0 no. 2857 at Barry in 1973. During a working career of 45 years, No. 2857 recorded a total mileage of 1,276,713 miles. It is often forgotten that in the early days of preservation, locos often left Barry by rail - as did 2857 in 1975.

GWR 2-8-0 no. 2874, dating from 1918 and withdrawn from service in May, 1963. 2874 is one of several ex-Barry locomotives until recently stored at the Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway but it is now awaiting restoration at the West Somerset Railway.

Boxpoc wheel. The BFB or 'Boxpoc' wheel was a feature of Bulleid locomotive designs, being both stronger and lighter than traditional spoked wheels. This is West Country class 4-6-2 no. 34046 'Braunton'.

SR Merchant Navy class 4-6-2 no. 35009 'Shaw Savill' in June 1984. The loco was originally outshopped from Eastleigh in 1942 as SR no. 21C9 and was initially allocated to Salisbury.

A significant inmate of Barry was LMS 'Jubilee' class 4-6-0 no. 45699 'Galatea', one of only four survivors of a class of 191. At one time thought to be beyond restoration, having had its centre driving wheels cut, the loco is now being restored at Carnforth.
