Bonfire Night Special: 66024 prepares to leave Swansea High Street on 5th November 2009 with 6Z70, 1920 Maliphant Sidings to Toton. The train comprised 2 postal NAA/PCVs and 2 NKAs which had been stored at Swansea since mail trains finished back in July 2003.  {A} The Latest Modern Rail Pictures (Updated 15.11.09).  (183)
The very, very last mail train from Swansea. Former Royal Mail NAA/PCV (Propelling Control Vehicle) 94344, two NKA/GUVs and a further NAA prepare to leave Swansea for Toton on 5th November 2009. The PCVs were converted by Hunslet Barclay from 1954 vintage Southend/Great Eastern (and later, West Yorkshire) class 307 emu DTCs in the mid 1990s for the EWS/Rail Express Systems operation.  {A} The Latest Modern Rail Pictures (Updated 15.11.09).  (174)
Another view of Craig y Nos/Penwyllt looking south on 14th April 2006. It has been documented that the substantial station building was funded by opera singer Adelina Patti who lived at Craig Y Nos Castle.  {G} The Railway Structures File.  (147)
Former Royal Mail NAA/PCV (Propelling Control Vehicle) 94344 at Swansea on 5th November 2009, before making the final Journey to Toton behind 66024. 94344 previously carried the number 75014.  {A} The Latest Modern Rail Pictures (Updated 15.11.09).  (133)
67005 'Queen's Messenger' passes Landore with the 'Somewhere in West Wales' to Swansea Royal Train on 7th March 2008.  {Ax} The UK Modern Rail File Vol. 3 (2008).  (115)

{Aw} The UK Modern Rail File Vol. 4 (2009). (762 images)
Views of the everyday and the unusual in the UK modern rail scene taken during 2009. As ever, photographs will be catalogued in locomotive/unit number order.
{Ax} The UK Modern Rail File Vol. 3 (2008). (898 images)
Views of the everyday and the unusual in the UK modern rail scene taken during 2008. Generally, photographs are catalogued in locomotive/unit number order.
{Ay} The UK Modern Rail File Vol. 2 (2007). (811 images)
Views of the UK modern rail scene taken during 2007. As ever, photographs are catalogued in locomotive/unit number order.
{Az} The UK Modern Rail File Vol. 1 (To 31.12.2006). (738 images)
Views of the ever-changing and colourful modern scene on Britain's post-privatisation railway from the 1990s to the end of 2006. Generally, photographs are catalogued in locomotive or unit number order.
{B} The UK Main Line Steam File. (297 images)
A collection of views showing preserved steam locomotives in action on the main line throughout the UK over the past 30 years. Photos are listed by their BR locomotive numbers, but with any recent shots on the first page.
{C} The UK Heritage Diesel & Electric File. (420 images)
The number of former main line diesel and electric locomotives which have been preserved continues to grow steadily. Here is a selection of them, on preserved lines and operating on main line specials.
{D} The British Rail File. (918 images)
A selection of over 900 images scanned from 35mm transparencies and black & white negatives of the 1970s/80s BR blue and, later, sectorisation liveries. Photographs are generally arranged in locomotive/unit number order. (Some early b/w and 'Instamatic' shots are included for interest value, rather than photographic quality!)
{E} The UK Railway Preservation File. (458 images)
A selection of views from Britain's preserved railways and steam centres, illustrating the authentic 'age of steam' scenes now being portrayed. The fruits of many hours of fundraising and unpaid labour...
{F} The UK Rolling Stock File. (31 images)
Items of UK railway rolling stock selected for their history, location or unusual features.
{G} The Railway Structures File. (170 images)
Stations, signalboxes and other railway buildings, mainly including structures on closed lines. All you have to do is imagine the trains...
{H} The Barry Scrapyard File. (78 images)
It's difficult to know where the British railway preservation movement would be without Dai Woodham's scrapyard at Barry. Over 200 locomotives were rescued from the yard and now form the mainstay of services on heritage railways throughout the country.
{I} The Industrial Steam Loco File. (286 images)
The unsung heroes of Britain's railways; small industrial locomotives, some of which have found a new life hauling passenger trains on the UK's heritage lines. Included is a small selection from the last days of steam at National Coal Board collieries in Wales, illustrating the run-down nature of the locomotives in their final years.
{J} The Industrial Diesel & Electric Loco File. (131 images)
A collection of scenes from diesel worked industrial railway systems. Preserved examples of industrial diesel and electric locomotives also are included. Locomotives are catalogued in builder/works no. order, with ex-main line locomotives in their BR number order.
{K} The Welsh Narrow Gauge File. (122 images)
The narrow gauge railways of Wales are legendary, so much so that many non-enthusiasts make a point of visiting as many of them as possible during their holiday in Wales. You won't find a better way of making your holiday pass at a leisurely pace.
{L} The French (SNCF) Rail File. (222 images)
Photographs taken around the standard gauge network of Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Français. See separate file (below) for minor railways.
{M} The French Minor Railway File. (30 images)

{N} The French Heritage Railway File. (122 images)
A selection of scenes from French railway preservation projects, heritage railways, tourist lines and museums. Sad news is the sudden closure, during April 2008, of the 33km metre gauge Chemin de Fer du Vivarais in Ardèche, due to "technical and financial problems". Some reports suggest that the closure may be permanent.
{O} The Irish (IE) Rail File. (27 images)
Photographs taken on the 5' 3" gauge network of Iarnród Éireann. Narrow gauge railways and items preserved in the UK also are included.

    Welcome
Welcome to Phil T's Rail Photo Files.

Almost 7000 rail photographs are now included and the number continues to grow; latest additions include some up-to-date images of the present day UK rail scene and views of heritage railways around the UK. More photos are constantly being added - hardly a week goes by when this doesn't happen - so remember to visit again soon!

Most images can be made available for use by publishers on their standard terms.

Most importantly, thanks to all the 'gen' providers who regularly supply information about what is happening and when. Without their help very few of the more interesting rail pictures would have been possible.

    Cameras
Early film cameras included a Kodak Brownie Six-20 Model E (that's the one with all the bells and whistles), a Kodak Duaflex II, an Instamatic 56X (yes, I know, but I was a student at the time...), a Brownie 44B, a neat little Agfa Optima 335, a Pentina E, an Agfa Sillette and, from 1982 until they were packed away a couple of years ago, two Canon AE-1Ps which proved to be remarkably reliable workhorses and which still are capable of many years service. Many miles were covered recording tramways and railways in Europe with these two; normally one was used for transparencies, the other for black and white film.

The digital age dawned when a little Fuji FinePix A403 was obtained 'free' with a PC and which is kept as a backup pocket camera. Enthused by the possibilities of digital photography, this was followed in recent years by a Canon EOS 350D with a little A580 as a backup.

Examples of the cameras previously used are retained - as well as one or two other vintage models which have been collected - so perhaps one day there may be time to indulge in some 'heritage' photography!
